Pathways
New to Government Contracting
Just the Basics to Get Started
This section is for beginners who want to access government contracting opportunities without feeling overwhelmed. You do not need to know everything to start. You only need to complete the steps below.
Once these steps are done, you can view opportunities and begin applying or positioning yourself for work.
Getting Started
The Minimum Steps to Access GovCon Opportunities
Create a SAM.gov Account
This gives you access to the federal contracting system.
- Anyone can create a SAM.gov account
- No business is required to create an account
- This allows you to search and view opportunities
Action:
Register an Entity in SAM (when ready)
To apply for contracts and get paid, you must register an entity.
- This can be a business or a sole proprietorship
- Registration is free
- A UEI is issued automatically
Get Your CAGE Code
Your CAGE Code identifies you as eligible to work with the federal government.
- Issued automatically through SAM.gov
- No separate CAGE application required
- Business or registered sole proprietor required
- Free — never pay for a CAGE Code
- Required for federal contracting
Action:
Select Your NAICS Code(s)
NAICS codes tell the government what you do.
- Choose the code that best matches your service or skill
- You can update this later
This step is not permanent. It can be adjusted as you grow.
Start Viewing Opportunities
At this point, you can begin exploring real opportunities.
- Search contracts inside SAM.gov
- Filter by NAICS or keywords
- Look for entry-level or smaller opportunities
